Reflowable thermal protectors (RTPs) for automotive applications provide overtemperature protection in much the same way that automotive fuses provide overcurrent protection. RTPs open when the temperature of the circuit in which it is included rises above a set point that is much higher than the maximum safe operating temperature of the circuit. Littelfuse makes AEC-Q200–qualified automotive RTPs optimized for mounting on printed circuit boards and protecting batteries. The devices can also be used to protect temperature-sensitive electronics in data centers and telecommunications systems.
